First, what a battery actually does

Here's the part that catches people off guard: if the grid goes down, your panels shut off too. It's a safety requirement, so line workers aren't handling wires your roof is energizing. Plenty of homeowners find this out the hard way, standing in a dark kitchen under $30,000 worth of solar panels.
A battery fixes both problems. Your surplus solar charges it during the day. At night, or during peak rate hours, or during an outage, your house runs off the battery instead of the grid. Essentials backup. Incentives are the part moving fastest, and not in your favor. The federal tax credit homeowners leaned on for years has wound down heading into 2026, so the old "just take 30% off" rule of thumb no longer holds the way it used to. Utility programs through Xcel and various Colorado incentives still exist, but they change from year to year and often run on limited funding that gets used up.
